Born an "Army Brat", the son of a military family, he soon learned about moving around the world. He enjoyed moving, though he seldom spent more than a year, or two, in any one school.
Richard Hill graduated from North Carolina State University in 1963 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Regular commission in the US Army. His military service included command of three Engineer companies, one in Germany and two in Vietnam.
Upon his return from Vietnam he earned a Masters Degree in Computer Science and Operations Research, which he put to good use in his second year in Vietnam at MACV Headquarters in Saigon as an Operations Research Specialist. There he wrote computer programs for the Secretary of Defense and the President. He later served with the Computer Systems Command in Texas and in Virginia.
Upon leaving the Army, he designed and programmed computer software systems in his own business for more than forty years. During that time he lived and programmed aboard a couple of different sailboats for ten years, and then became an avid RV'er. He has four grown children by a previous marriage.
Today he writes and operates H & H Media Group. He lives with his lovely wife Heidi and Cat Charlie in Alachua, Florida.

Born an "Army Brat", the son of a military family, he soon learned about moving around the world. He enjoyed moving, though he seldom spent more than a year, or two, in any one school.
He graduated from NC State University with a BS in Mechanical Engineering. Following his first tour in Vietnam, he earned an MS in Computer Science and Operations Research from Missouri University of Science and Technology. Then back to Vietnam.
Upon his return he served 6 years with the Computer Systems Command as a Systems Analyst.
After 15 years, he'd had enough of the service and left to form his own company, selling hardware and writing software. He got the yen to go sailing and lived aboard two sailboats for about 10 years, still working with computers. He sailed to the Bahamas 13 times and made one lengthy passage to the British Virgin Islands.
While in Vietnam he had been heavily exposed to Agent Orange and the long term effects began to take their toll, forcing him to become a landlubber once more, but not away from computers. He continued to program and bult several companies.

Iron Soldiers in Vietnam
“It was a long flight from Fort Lewis, WA, To Hawaii, and then Taiwan, where the crew was swapped out for the remaining hop to Vietnam. The plane, a chartered stretch Boeing 707, was at about 15,000 feet when I looked out the window over Saigon. I knew that our destination, Bien Hoa airfield, was only about 25 miles northeast. I wondered why we were still so high when I noticed that the stewardess was so nervous that she had 3 cigarettes and 2 cups of coffee going as she sat in the galley. Something was not quite right.”

Iron Soldiers In Vietnam
This book will be an enjoyable read for any soldier who served with an engineer unit in Vietnam. Iron Soldiers is the story of the 577th Engineer Battalion (Construction) in Vietnam from January of 1967 through January of 1968. It is the story of a young Captain and the thousand or more men he worked with during the construction of a 400 bed hospital, two Army airfields and many other projects. It is the story of dedication, effort, pathos, pride and humor. And the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army played their role, of course.
The book was written for those living Veterans who served in the battalion from 1966-1972, their families, and for those who perished

Major Hill Aloha I just wanted to drop you line to say many thanks for your book on "Iron Soldiers in Viet Nam" which I recently bought and added to my library of keepers. I served during the same time period as you at Tuy Hoa in Alpha Company assigned as a mechanic to the Engineer repair section ("third shop") working on the Bn`s Engineer Equipment that required DS support. One memory that stays with me is being deployed to Dong Tre on a contact team to replace a large Cummins engine on one of your dead-lined 290 M Scrapers. I distinctly remember the noise those 175 mm long barrel howitzers made day and night firing H&E into the boonies that were providing Arty support to the camp. I was really glad to complete the job and get there hell out of there back to the beach at Tuy Hoa !. If I remember correctly your 1st Shirt drafted me into your company`s perimeter guard detail every night that I was there. You did a great job in your book on reflecting what Army Engineer Construction Bn was about and what we accomplished while in Viet Nam. As a 20 year SP4 at the time I will never forget what I experienced during my year tour with the BN and the comradery that I shared with my fellow" Iron Soldiers" Interestingly enough it inspired me to join the reserves when my enlistment was up in 1969 and completed a career of active and reserve for almost 38 hrs as enlisted and as a Engineer Branch commission officer retiring as a 05 in 2006 after being mobilized for a two and half year 2003 in support of Iraq Freedom. Again, great job on the book and thanks for getting it right! Sincerely Steve Mortimer SP/4, A CO 577th En (Const) DEC 1966- Dec 1967
