hardship, endurance

The phrase "endure like a good soldier" is a biblical metaphor, specifically from 2 Timothy 2:3, encouraging perseverance and resilience in the face of hardship, as a soldier would endure training and battle.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

  • Biblical Context:

The verse in 2 Timothy 2:3 reads, "You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ".

  • Metaphor:

The passage uses the image of a soldier to illustrate the challenges and trials that Christians may face in their faith journey.

  • Endurance:

"Endure hardship" (or "endure suffering") emphasizes the importance of remaining steadfast and persevering through difficult times.

  • Good Soldier:

The phrase "good soldier" suggests that Christians should be disciplined, focused, and committed to their calling, just as a good soldier is committed to their duty.

  • No Entanglement:

The following verses (2 Timothy 2:4-5) further elaborate on the soldier's role, stating that a soldier should not entangle himself with the affairs of this life, but focus on pleasing his commander.

  • Application:

This concept encourages Christians to remain faithful and resilient in their faith, even when facing difficulties, and to be focused on their spiritual goals, rather than worldly distractions.

What is something you can learn from Hinduism?

The purpose of life is to achieve peace. But the purpose of living is to be kind. Help those weaker than yourself and always stand up in the face of wrong doing. Sinning is a sin, witnessing a sin is an even bigger sin. - 07 Jun 2020

What should Christians know about Hinduism and Hardship?

Hindus strive to achieve dharma, which is a code of living that emphasizes good conduct and morality. Hindus revere all living creatures and consider the cow a sacred animal. Food is an important part of life for Hindus. Most don't eat beef or pork, and many are vegetarians.

What does Hinduism teach about suffering?

Hindu traditions promote

1) the acceptance of suffering as being a just consequence under laws of karma.

2) the realization that suffering is transitory while in this world, and not affecting one's true Self, and 3) the view that suffering is not solely negative.

I made the following journal entries on 19 Mar. 25

1. is there new hope for me?

Hope and meaning by embracing hardship and suffering (from the Hindu perspective).

2. Wealth and possessions are transitory – a vapour of reality

Like St. Francis of Assisi, the Brahmin priest strives to leave all worldly possessions and progress beyond them towards the emptying of the self to pursue peace (and nirvana = emptiness/nothingness).

Conclusions

1. Detach from worldly things and pleasures to pursue Christ and holiness.

2. Accept hardships as a pathway to peace, holiness, joy, peace, hope and love – finding peace in God alone.

3. Change my mental and spiritual paradigm. My “low” estate may be more beneficial than I have believed, recognised and acknowledged so far in my Christian faith.

4. Expect joy! Can this WAY be full of joy? Yes – and maybe more complementary to many other paths and practices.

5. Remember the “Baptism of suffering” taught in the Assembly Of God church (1973-1979)
