Tasmania's cool climate, mild summers and long autumn days are perfect for cool-climate wine making.
In fact, Tasmania has been winning awards since the 1840s.
Tasmania offers an impressive range of elegant cool-climate wines with riesling, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, cabernet sauvignon, pinot gris, and gewurztraminer all grown and produced here with excellent results.
Tasmania also enjoys an international reputation as a leading producer of some of Australia's premium wines. Its pinot noir and sparkling wines in particular win high praise from winemakers around the world and plenty of trophies from wine judges and critics alike.
Wine routes are found north of Launceston in the Tamar Valley and east to Pipers River. In the south, the Derwent, Coal River and Huon Valleys together comprise the Southern Wine Route and are all within an easy drive of Hobart.
You'll also find excellent wines produced along Tasmania's east coast between Swansea and Bicheno. Each route offers a range of wine styles for tasting from cellar doors, many in a beautiful setting with stunning views.
Tasmanian wines are found in bars, eateries and local grocers all over the state so there's a fine drop to sample no matter where you are on the island.

Thirsty? Tasmania has some of the best distilleries in the world
Try one you won't be disappointed
Whilst Australia has a long history of whisky distilling, dating back to 1820, the whisky industry looks very different in the 21st century to when it began. Distillation was legalised by the Australian government at the end of 1820, and by 1822 the first legal distillery was opened in Tasmania.
Prior to 1990, over 85% of whisky production came out of Victoria. While Tasmania had a small whisky industry in the early 1820s this ended quickly and there was no whisky produced in Tasmania between 1838 and 1990.
Tasmania has the most distilleries of any state in Australia by far, with over 22 whisky distilleries in 2020. This is due to conditions in Tasmania being very suitable for whisky production. The climate has a large diurnal temperature range, and seasonal variation, which is desirable for whisky maturation. In addition, distilleries in Tasmania claim to use some of the best quality water in the world.
