Introduction to Basic Safety Training

STCW Basic Safety Training (BST) is a series of four basic safety training courses that are required for seafarers to be employed or engaged in any capacity onboard a vessel at all levels, such as deck and engine room rating qualifications, for most navigation positions, and all engineering certificates of competency.

STCW BST course(s) are for new and existing crew with the offshore oil and gas industry, new entrants to larger vessels in the marine industry, or experienced mariners who have not had previous safety training, with the knowledge and skills to contain, report, and respond to a marine emergency, fight fires, abandon ship and understand the basics of workplace safety, or seafarers requiring refresher training.
The STCW Basic Safety Training certification is the legal minimum requirement for anyone looking for commercial work onboard vessels over 24 meters, including Offshore Oil and Gas vessels, Superyachts and Cruise ships.Seafarers undergoing STCW BST training must be at least 18 years of age and meet the standard of competence for certificates of Basic Safety Training set out in various STCW sections.Seafarers will be assessed against the learning outcomes by using quizzes and a final online examination as appropriate.After successful completion of the Basic Safety Training eLearning course a Certificate of Proficiency will be issued for a period of for 5 years.
With the implementation of the STCW 2010, seafarers must provide evidence of having the competencies by completing refresher training every 5 years, as described in the STCW Code 1978, as amended.Please go to our STCW eLearning site @ for full details, where you can register, pay for and complete your chosen STCW course(s).The four STCW Basic Safety Training courses are as follows:
Personal Survival Techniques – A theory and practical course, you will be taught how to abandon ship using life rafts and also how to don life jackets correctly;
Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting – This firefighting course covers both practical and theoretical situations that are taught by professional firefighters;
Elementary First Aid – A theory and practical course, during this session you will be taught vital basic 1st aid and life savings skills;
Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities – This is a theory-based course that focuses on teaching the essentials of personal safety and social responsibilities onboard a vessel.
Security Awareness Training for all Seafarers – This course is not normally part of STCW BST, however it is a required course that you must complete prior going to sea.
