What happiness comes to you when you feel your spiritual poverty?

“What happiness comes to you when you feel your spiritual poverty? For yours is the realm of heaven’s kingdom. - Jesus Christ in Matthew 5:3 - The Passion Translation (TPT)

Here are some reflections from a social activist, concerning the polarities, not only in my beloved country (South Africa), but also globally.

As I face the constant rains and cold in Cape Town today (25 June 2025), my heart goes out to the homeless. A vast multitude who exist here and worldwide, without employment, shelter, water, food and adequate clothing. Living below the poverty line.

This is a deep darkness. A result of the global darkness and sin. The coldness of loveless, greedy, power-hungry, self-serving seekers of fame and fortune, at the cost of the poor.

Why is there so much poverty amidst so much wealth that is hoarded by the wealthy? Such polarisation between the rich and the poor?

There is so much darkness in our world, yet there is also so much love, light and beauty in those working for social justice.

"God blesses those who hunger and thirst for justice, for they will be satisfied." Matthew 5:6 (NLT)

But the prevalence of the darkness appears to be greater than the light, as we face our sin and the consequences of evil in the world.

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is Lord of all. Sovereign, Omnipresent, Omniscient - Omnipotent, even though it appears we are losing the battle, Christ is on the throne. The day of reckoning, the New World - a New Earth, a New Kingdom, is coming soon. And "He shall reign forever and ever." (Revelations 11:15)

Let it be so. Amen. Amen.
