U-turn

A Pathway out of Homelessness

U-Turn exists to create an effective life-change pathway accessible to every person experiencing homelessness.

Over the last 25 years, they have crafted an innovative skills-based programme designed by a multidisciplinary team of Occupational Therapists, Social workers, homeless support workers, counsellors, trainers, life coaches and volunteers.

The programme is Christian faith-based, with long-term results for rehabilitation and reintegration.

They equip them with skills to overcome homelessness, through a programme of 4 phases.

Six months after graduating from the U-turn programme, they follow up on progress. Their graduates remain sober, employed and housed.

Cricket Meyer: Teaching

Inside and Outside South Africa

Bergvliet Congregational Church has been supporting Cricket Meyer and her projects for 20 years now both inside and outside South Africa. Firstly, she worked under the Rafiki Foundation in Rwanda and then at Pfunanane Academy. She is currently teaching 120 children aged between 4-6 years in Khayelitsha and leading the staff Bible study twice a week to 14 staff members.

Her ministry with the elderly will start on a small scale and will then increase as funds permit. Cricket recently purchased Xhosa bibles for both these and her aim is to get as many bibles as she can into the homes. Cricket also runs a Holiday Bible club during the school holidays and besides teaching them the gospel they are being kept off the streets.

Douglas Murray Home

An old age home to maintain a sustainable place of safety

Douglas Murray Home is an old age home for those who are in need of care and frail care from the extended Retreat community and have limited resources.

Bergvliet Congregational Church periodically helps Douglas Murray Home with food donated from our Harvest Festival and on occasion when the home has put out a specific request.

We frequently donate knitted items to the home.

Douglas Murray’s goal and mission is to maintain a sustainable place of safety for the aged and to provide care for the frail and aged in association with organizations and individuals in the community. A lot of the extra-curricular care is provided by volunteers e.g.: Physical Therapists etc.

The home has an ongoing wish list which is as follows:

  • Groceries (tea/coffee, dried goods, and perishables like fruit and vegetables)
  • Clothing
  • Bedding and Curtains
  • Ornaments
  • Bric-a-brac
  • Furniture
  • Artwork
  • Electric appliances.

“It is always a privilege to be able to look after the elderly in their twilight years.”
